Activity DescriptionGiven the numerous risk factors associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the comorbidities associated with the disease, the effectiveness of screening methods to detect the disease early may reduce poor outcomes. Multiple treatment methods and monitoring strategies have been developed to control CKD before further progression occurs. In 2011, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) published a comparative effectiveness review to address the benefits and harms of screening, monitoring, and treating CKD stages 1-3. In this innovative "crossfire" activity, leading clinicians in the field of CKD will discuss applications of the AHRQ review findings to improve outcomes for patients with the disorder.
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Compare the efficacy and safety of systematic CKD screening in asymptomatic adults, with or without recognized risk factors for CKD incidence, progression, or complications
- Assess the impact of monitoring for worsening kidney function and/or kidney damage among those already diagnosed or being screened
- Evaluate the comparative efficacy and harms of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic approaches to early screening and treatment
- Apply the AHRQ review findings to guide effective, patient-centered treatment and management decisions
