Applying AHRQ's Comparative Effectiveness Research in Nonpharmacological Treatment of Depression and Discussion in Military Settings

Program Overview

Activity Description

Depression transcends patient populations with causative factors that can include serious illness, substance abuse, life-threatening events, genetics, conflict, and other factors. Treatment-resistant depression also crosses patient populations in both military and civilian settings and can occur in times of war and peace, during recessions, and in periods of economic growth. Are nonpharmacological interventions effective and safe in reducing symptoms of depression in patients with treatment-resistant depression? How do nonpharmacological approaches compare with standard medical treatments? This innovative video program pairs a psychologist and a physician representing military and civilian patient populations to address these questions based on the key findings from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's (AHRQ)comparative effectiveness review in treatment-resistant depression.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Compare the effectiveness of these interventions against each other, as well as against standard medications, for treating acute-phase symptoms of depression in both military and civilian populations
  • Evaluate comparisons between these interventions with regard to safety, adverse events, and adherence
  • Discuss the AHRQ review findings to managing TRD across military and civilian settings, with special emphasis on guiding patient-centered shared and informed decision making

This CME activity is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, psychologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, case managers and health education specialists.
